2018 Spring Concert

Lift Every Voice and Sing: Remembering Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

We honor the extraordinary contributions of America’s greatest champion for civil rights, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., on the 50th anniversary of his assassination. Though his death came too soon, Dr. King’s spirit lives on in his words and the music he loved. We’ll sing Adolphus Hailstork’s dramatic cantata I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes plus a rich array of music from the African American tradition, including Jester Hairston’s Amen, William Grant Still’s Here’s One, Andre Thomas’s Keep Your Lamps, Larry Fleming’s Give Me Jesus, and our own Tim Graf’s Deep River. We’ll salute the Civil Rights Movement with We Shall Overcome and Lift Every Voice and Sing¸ the unofficial African American national anthem of faith and hope. We’ll remember Dr. King with U2’s MLK and the last music he ever heard, Precious Lord. Fifty years later, Dr. King’s message of equality, justice, and peace still shines to guide us through the darkness.

“Life’s piano can only produce the melodies of brotherhood when it is recognized that the black keys are as basic, necessary, and beautiful as the white keys.” ~ Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
